The very best way to ensure a child has a meaningful and lasting experience is to be a part of a synagogue community. The Jewish "coming of age"
Imagine if you had a guide book to help navigate adolescence. That's what the Sages of the Talmud had in mind when they set the age at which a child becomes obligated in communal religious life -- the moral and ethical principles of Judaism -- at 12 for girls and 13 for boys.

A legal status
"Bar / Bat Mitzvah" may literally translate as "Son / Daughter of a Commandment", but it's really a technical term. In Rabbinic sources, "bar / bat" is used to indicate legal status. For example, "bar / bat Kiddushin" refers to a person who in eligible for marriage (Kiddushin) under Jewish law (rather than "son / daughter of marriage").
